Planning-Zoning Department Responsibilities

The City of Bedford's Planning-Zoning Department...

  • Conducts site and building plan review, issues building permits and inspects buildings during and after construction for compliance with state and local law.
  • Manages the city’s Geographical Information System (G.I.S.) which provides electronic mapping of facilities, utilities, property and zoning boundaries throughout Bedford
  • Provides administrative assistance for filings of rezoning, land use variances, special exceptions and subdivision plats.
  • Oversees code enforcement for such things as, building and fire inspections, issues involving residential and commercial buildings.
  • Administers the policies and actions of the Bedford Plan Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Historic Review Board (learn more about these groups).
  • This office also is responsible for code enforcement on issues of high grass, weeds and complaints involving unsightly debris.
